Hiking and Gourmet Tour Experience
Lady of the snow
A 9th-century church on the top of a mountain where you’ll enjoy panoramic views onto the islands and hinterland.
Authentic tavern
Enjoy a three-course dinner of traditional Dalmatian dishes, including the famous “peka”, or the way we prepare meat and seafood “under the bell.”
The tour begins in the afternoon as we gather at the Sugaman Tours office, after which we hop in our air-conditioned minivan and head towards the nearby town of Omiš. The beauty of Omiš, with its towering mountains and stunning shoreline, is enhanced by the Cetina river which gushes into the sea and boasts a wild canyon that stretches deep into the hinterland.
PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE CETINA CANYON
On the first stop of our tour, you’ll get to experience the beauty of the Cetina river canyon, the city of Omiš and its entire panorama. After we enjoy the views of the region, we will continue towards the starting point of our hiking tour and the small village of Truše.
Somorica and “the Lady of the Snow”
We’ll climb towards the mountain top, which is approximately 400 meters above sea level. The majority of the hike will pass through a shaded green forest, which will undoubtedly heighten the experience. The hike also offers a stunning panoramic view of the Omiš Riviera and the islands stretching as far as the eye can see.
As we reach the top of the mountain, we’ll encounter an ancient church standing proudly on the mountain’s edge. This Croatian church, which dates back to the 9th century, is named “The Lady of the Snow” thanks to the unusual event witnessed by the locals when snow fell on the mountain in the middle of the summer (precisely, on August 5th).
The church is also surrounded by old tombstones dedicated to the people who populated this area in the 9th century.
As we enjoy the spectacular view from the mountain, spanning the coastline and islands on one side and the Dalmatian hinterland on the other, we’ll make our way back for the real highlight of the tour – a traditional Dalmatian dinner featuring local specialties.
Authentic Dalmatian Cuisine
We’ll dine inside an old stone house exemplary of traditional Dalmatian taverns where a local chef will craft a meal based on the local cuisine. You’ll be able to enjoy three courses and drinks to your liking. The main course is Dalmatia’s famous “peka”, or meat and seafood prepared “under the bell.” Namely, this dish is prepared inside a fireplace, covered with an iron bell, which is then covered with hot coals.
After one bite, we promise you’ll be chasing after the taste for eternity. Another local delicacy on the menu is “soparnik.” Soparnik is traditional to this region and has been protected by the European Union since 2016. It is also part of Croatia’s intangible cultural heritage, honored by the Croatian Ministry of Culture.
Soparnik was first made in this area many centuries ago and is said to be the prototype of Italian pizza. Not only is it a “must-try” delicacy of the region, but you’ll have the chance to take a bite out of history!
After we finish with our traditional Dalmatian feast, we’ll head back to Split to complete our Hiking and Gourmet tour.
